The
expressed mission of the Department of History is to
promote the study of History and its related
disciplines, to disseminate academic and intellectual
excellence, and to maintain high professional standards.
In addition, the Department of History, through its
organization, curriculum and pedagogy, adheres to the
following goals:
- to inculcate in
the students an understanding and appreciation
of the past and the
- forces that
shaped it;
- to expand
student's factual knowledge and conceptual
understanding of history;
- to instill and
refine in the students historical methodology
and rigorous scholarly
- attributes and
prerequisite skills, notably of analysis,
synthesis, and interpretation;
- to provide
quality instruction and a favorable learning
environment for the study of History for all
students regardless of academic major;
- to provide
profession training for students who wish to
teach in the public schools and community
colleges, to pursue Ph.D. degrees in the field
of history, or to seek careers in the field of
public history, culture and heritage; and,
- to assist
liberal arts, pre-law, business and other majors
in the development of valuable skills and
intellectual faculties as required by a civil
society
